FIVE ARTISTS.
FIVE TANKS.
ONE IDEA.
Before they were art, they were high-altitude oxygen tanks designed for the B-17 Bomber during WWII. But their shape was intriguing. Their history inspiring. And transforming them became a compelling challenge for The Digital Immigrants.
The result? 5 different works of art with 5 unique interpretations.
The final products are up for digital auction now through the end of November.
THE DIGITAL IMMIGRANTS we are a small collective of skilled individuals from the Midwest who share a similar way of life. Artists who work in the creative industry by day, yet still have a visceral need to create for ourselves by night. Welcome to our Diligence.

Title: INTAKE
Size: 18" X 26"
Deprived of oxygen at 10,000 ft., this tank breathed life into an air fighter. On the ground, the air we breathe is free—uncontained and surrounding us without a second thought. Gold leaf, a medium I utilize in much of my work, allowed me to transform this tank into a monument, with trophy-like quality. The mouthpieces and tubing invoke the idea of respiration and hypoxia, as well as confinement, isolation and of the memory missions it served. Air, as good as gold.

Title: RATIONIZER
Size: 18" X 26"
Though at first glance these tanks conjure images of violence and strife, they once delivered the resource most vital for survival. As the world progresses, we continue to deplete our natural resources at a frightening rate, with clean air, food and water becoming increasingly scarce. In its new life, this tank still delivers oxygen, but now through the same capsules used to distribute the toys and stickers we all begged so incessantly for as children. There is a striking similarity in shape between the tank itself and these small capsules often associated with adolescence and delight. It intrigues me that one simple shape can simultaneously represent both peril and comfort, while raising the question: how long before the air we breathe is rationed, too?

Title: RE-ENTRY
Size: 18" X 26"
Having military veterans in my family, I have always been fascinated with the strength and character they possess. ""Re-entry"" explores a soldier's transition from surviving a war to surviving re-entry into society. The images are taken from a WWII Bombardier's 1942 training manual. The handwriting is documentation from that of an actual Air Force soldier lifting off from 0-20,000 ft. without oxygen. The oxygen once sealed in this tank has been replaced with unparalleled experiences. The tank represents the need to keep them contained.

Title: SUDDEN REVIVAL
Size: 18" X 26"
I have re-interpreted the WWII oxygen tank as a symbol of hope and grace in a time of tyranny and despair. The vintage flight attendant represents the basic need for survival—her positioning, reflective of Christian iconography, is in complete contrast to the hardships of war and the endured emotional and physical turmoil felt by all humanity. The presentation of the oxygen mask connected to the oxygen source offers the audience an escape from their personal war and tragedy.

Title: DISCOTANQUE
Size: 18" X 26"
Sensory overload is taxing the human system. We are witness to the effects of increasing environmental, economic, and psychological stress. We are being bombarded with information and advertising, succumbed by fields of microwave and electronic transmissions. Economic competition requires us to produce more and more efficiently. Add to that the threats of terrorism and war that have created a palpable level of world anxiety and we have a culture dominated by stress, tension, and fear. We are beings of vibrating energy disintegrating in our over-stimulation. Inhale…Exhale… Repeat
